The article contains data on the use of medical leeches in modern and traditional medicine, information on the effect of hirudotherapy in the complex treatment of hypertension, and data on the effect of hirudin on blood vessels. The article also contains information about some types of leeches. The decrease in the number of leeches in recent years is explained by the increase in their use by fishermen as bait, medical purposes and the relative pollution of the medicinal leech habitat.
