The development of oral communication competence is a central objective in foreign language education. Traditional language instruction often relies on simplified or artificially constructed texts that may not reflect real-life communication. In contrast, authentic materials – such as real-life conversations, videos, podcasts, and news reports – provide learners with exposure to natural language use. This study investigates the impact of authentic materials on the development of students’ oral communication competence in English language learning. A quasi-experimental research design was employed involving two groups of university students studying English as a foreign language. The experimental group was exposed to authentic materials, while the control group received instruction based on traditional textbook materials. Data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, classroom observations, and student interviews. The findings demonstrate that the use of authentic materials significantly improved students’ fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary usage, and confidence in speaking. The study concludes that integrating authentic materials into language instruction contributes positively to the development of communicative competence and enhances learners’ motivation. The results provide important pedagogical implications for language teachers and curriculum developers.
