Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains one of the most significant medical and social problems of our time. Despite the generally recognized role of smoking as the main etiological factor, many aspects of the influence of current smoking status and cumulative tobacco experience on clinical manifestations of the disease require further study.
